With all of the focus on ‘fake news,’ it is incumbent on news consumers to be informed as to how news stories are reported and produced. The media is often accused of political bias but other factors usually play a larger role in the news that we see and read. Sheridan looks at those factors as well as the shift the news media has taken from being gatekeepers to gatewatchers.
Join us as we welcome Mr. Brian Sheridan to speak on this timely topic!
Mr. Sheridan is Lecturer and Chair of the Department of Communication at Mercyhurst University. He teaches courses in social media, journalism, and film appreciation. Sheridan has co-authored the textbook “America in the Thirties” and serves as a monthly writer for “Lake Erie Lifestyle” magazine. His work has also appeared in other publications. Sheridan, an Erie native, spent nearly 20 years as a television journalist working as a reporter and anchor for WICU-TV, WJET-TV, and WFXP-TV. His most well-known story was his reporting of the infamous “Pizza Bomber” incident live from the scene of the crime.
As always, light fare will be available as part of our evening, provided by Sheetz Kidz charity. It's how we give back!
